Àìåðèêàíñêèé ýêîëîã æèâîòíûõ, ïðîôåññîð çîîëîãèè Èëëèíîéñêîãî óíèâåðñèòåòà (1927–1946), îñíîâàòåëü Ýêîëîãè÷åñêîãî îáùåñòâà Àìåðèêè (1915, â 1916 ã. – ïðåçèäåíò).

Ýêîëîãî-ôèçèîëîãè÷åñêàÿ áèîãåîãðàôèÿ æèâîòíûõ. Ââåë â áèîãåîãðàôèþ ëàíäøàôòíî-áèîíîìè÷åñêóþ òðàêòîâêó ïîíÿòèÿ "áèîì" [biome] (Clements, 1916; Phillips, 1931), îáîçíà÷àþùåãî ïðèðîäíóþ çîíó ñî ñïåöèôè÷åñêèìè ðàñòèòåëüíûì è æèâîòíûì íàñåëåíèåì (òóíäðà, áîðåàëüíûå è òðîïè÷åñêèå ëåñà, ñòåïü, ïóñòûíÿ) (Shelford, 1932).
