Èñòîðè÷åñêàÿ áèîãåîãðàôèÿ êðóïíûõ ïîçâîíî÷íûõ. Ó÷èòûâàÿ, ÷òî â òå÷åíèå ïî÷òè âñåãî ïàëåîçîÿ, ìåçîçîÿ è êàéíîçîÿ Öåíòðàëüíàÿ Àçèÿ íå ïîêðûâàëàñü ìîðåì, ñ÷èòàë ýòó îáëàñòü öåíòðîì ýâîëþöèè ìíîãèõ ãðóïï íàçåìíûõ ïîçâîíî÷íûõ. Ïðåäëîæèë îðèãèíàëüíóþ ýâîëþöèîííóþ êîíöåïöèþ àðèñòîãåíåçà (ñì.: Ðàóòèàí, 1988). Àâòîð ïîíÿòèÿ "àäàïòèâíàÿ ðàäèàöèÿ".
